We Put Out at SXSW
03/21/06
A midget, a Hare Krishna and Jesus walk into a bar...and so it began. SXSW '06. 2/3 of We Put Out bands were down in Austin, where the main topic of conversation was wondering which party was offering up free BBQ and beer. The North Atlantic kicked off Wednesday night (actually, early Thursday morning) playing
Spiro's
at 1am. Doing mostly songs off their upcoming album, "Wires In The Walls", the question on everyone's mind was how 3 people can play so loudly. Prior to that, TNA and We Put Out were very surprised to learn that
Tia Carrere
is not only that chick from Wayne's World, but is also an amazing jam metal band from Austin. Another highlight of the night included Chicago's Russian Circles, who were reminiscent of an all instrumental Thursday. They would be seen 2 more times over the course of the week.
Thursday saw Patent Pending roll into town. The band headed down to the Gibson Guitar showroom and taped a series of video IDs: "We're Patent Pending and you're watching our new video at [insert hip clothing store here]." They then autographed a Gibson Flying V to be auctioned off for charity, then it was off to grab some BBQ and Austin's legendary Iron Works, where it was a pound of meat for everyone. After an hour trying to park, The P-Unit loaded in and played an energizing, comedy filled set of
infectious
pop punk. We Put Out dares anyone not to crack a smile at one of their shows. Cracking a rib is another question. That's what happens when you break the fall of a
balcony-diving
Michael Pending. Ask this
guy
. "Save Each Other, The Whales Are Doing Fine" is due out June 6th.
Thursday night into Friday was more beer, more BBQ and more bands. Highlights were Circle Takes The Square, the Riot Act Party, Giant Squid, Minsk, The Gathering, Akimbo, Bible of the Devil and the mighty Baroness.
Saturday morning was cold and rainy but there was a buffet with bacon and sausage on it, so all wasn't lost. The North Atlantic kicked off the Alternative Press party with a handclapping bang (Cullen, the next time you decide to do that, please warn your uptight label manager). Louder (if that was even possible) and clearer than Wednesday's performance,
TNA
turned more then one hung-over head. Other bands loading in were seen taking a break and wandering over to see who was making such a beautiful noise. The greatness of bands came full circle as Thursday closed out AP's party.
The rest of the Saturday was spent with more BBQ (Stubbs, this time) beer (Shiner, still) and great bands. Stops at the Hopeless showcase, checking out Zombi and rocking out to Dungen and The Sword with free Miller High Life tall boys at the Kemado/Decibel closing party ended We Put Out at SXSW. Fun times were had. See you next year.
